Course Objectives: 

This course aims to provide prospective mathematics teachers a deep understanding about child development and learning in the middle grades. From physical to development, characterictics of a typical middle school student will be analyzed. Having a deep understanding of a young adolescents, prospective mathematics teachers could design effective instructions which achieve its aims.  

Course Learning Outcomes: 

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Have a deep understanding young adolescents’ growth
  • Recognize the concrete operational thought and wide range of individual and developmental differences, Piaget’s findings
  • Discover about young adolescents’ physical, social, emotional, cognitive development
  • Have a grasp of the core elements of effective middle level schools and the heart and soul of the middle school concept
  • Analyze the effect of child development and learning teories on designing the curriculum
  • Recognize the requirement in making instruction meaningful in the light of knowledge about children’s development and learning
  • Apply the knowledge of middle school children development and thinking in teaching
