The aim of this course is to introduce the student to interviewing skills, including basic listening and influencing skills and strategies, core conditions, building rapport and therapeutic relationship with the client(s), process and stages of counseling.
1. identify the application of theory in the practice of counseling.
2. identify to the needs of clients on the basis of their presenting problems, culture, nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, education, SES, disability, and spiritual or religious affiliation,
3. identify the process and phases of counseling (e.g., intake, assessment, referral, intervention, evaluation, termination, and follow-up),
4. identify the counselor-client relationship (e.g., appropriate boundaries) and counselor characteristics, values, and behaviors that influence the helping processes,
5. demonstrate an understanding and application of essential interviewing and counseling skills.
