Course Objectives:

This course is a major design experience based on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work and incorporating appropriate engineering standards and multiple realistic constraints.

Students work in teams to provide practical solutions to mechanical engineering problems. Starting from a problem statement, they investigate the reasons for the problem, and what others have done to solve it. They offer better solutions to the problem and perform analysis from conceptual level to detailed level. Finally they build and test a prototype of their solution. Formal communication of the teams’ work is through written reports and oral presentations based on a calendar announced at the beginning of the semester.

Teams work under the leadership of the course instructor, who oversees the teams’ work and assigns grades. Teams may seek advice from other faculty/staff members, or experts outside of the campus. Teams may also have sponsors from industry.

Course Learning Outcomes:

Having completed this course, students are expected to:

  • be competent in designing a mechanical engineering system as a member of a team.
  • synthesize their mechanical engineering knowledge and skills
  • know how to manufacture a working prototype of their design.
  • know how to document and present their design work efficiently.

understand the fundamentals of project management.
