Course Objectives: 

The aim of this course is to encourage teacher candidates to develop an in-depth understanding of life studies and social studies curricula implemented in Turkey. To this end, students are expected to develop curricular literacy and analyze life studies and social studies curricula based on their underlying philosophy, objectives, content, suggested learning-teaching methods and techniques, instructional materials, and assessment and evaluation techniques. Along with these, students are further encouraged to develop unit plans to teach life studies and social studies in primary education. In addition, they are supposed to develop essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop lesson plans for teaching life studies and social studies in primary education. Students are also expected to implement their lesson plans and reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of their lesson plan implementations to develop self-reflection skills. Lastly, students are expected to analyze the social studies curriculum of another country and develop a broader and comparative perspective with respect to the social studies curricula that are implemented in other countries.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to;

4. design a unit plan for teaching life studies in primary education,

5. design a unit plan for teaching social studies in primary education,

6. design and implement a constructivist lesson plan for teaching life studies in primary education,

7. design and implement a constructivist lesson plan for teaching social studies  in primary education,

8. discuss the social studies education around the world.
