Definition of special education, terms related to special education, causes of disabilities. Importance of early diagnosis and treatment. Inclusion and roles and responsibilities in inclusion. Types, characteristics, education of disabilities, and accommodations regarding these children in inclusive settings. Parents of children with special needs and including parents into their children’s education. Special education programs and institutions in Turkey. Course Objectives: 

This course is intended to convey the characteristics of special needs children, who have an important place in the field of education, to educator candidates and how to support both the students in this group and their families.

Course Learning Outcomes: 

1. analyze how special education has progressed over the years and where inclusion fits into their teaching practices
2. debate the benefits of inclusion and the barriers to successful inclusion
3. explain their school districts special education processes and procedures
4. summarize special education processes / procedures as applied to special education practice in schools.
5. demonstrate understanding of the learning strengths & needs of students with disabilities
6. interpret legal and ethical issues in Special Education
