Course Objectives:
This course aims to increase language teacher candidates’ awareness in principles of language teaching methodology. The course also provides an opportunity for students to develop a set of principles that can guide their practice. It is designed to highlight effective instructional practices and help students expand the repertoire of specific practices that they can make use of in the classroom while teaching a foreign language. Students will be able to reflect on their learning as teachers by evaluating the current trends, and innovative approaches in English Language Teaching.
Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- differentiate the concepts of approach, method and technique,
- critically evaluate the methods and approaches of language teaching, their historical background and rationale, and their current relevance to their teaching experience,
- identify the underlying principles of language teaching methodology, techniques used in the field, and appropriate philosophical approaches to the process of language learning,
- critically evaluate new trends and innovative approaches in English language teaching,
- choose a contextually relevant language teaching philosophy based on different language teaching and learning perspectives.
