Course Objectives: 

This course aims to have students develop sub-skills of reading and identify literal vs. non-literal and direct vs. indirect meaning. Students will relate inferences from the text to real life. Students will analyze, synthesize and evaluate information, and react to readings. Students will develop basic research skills with references to reading that includes scanning, skimming, library/internet search, analysis and synthesis of academic texts.

Course Learning Outcomes: 

At the end of this class students will be able to;

1)  Deduce the meaning of unknown words analyzing the context

2)  Define the meaning of the unknown words in the text and, by using derivational suffixes, convert the words in different parts of speech to generate new words

3)  Analyze the discourse

4)  Identify the cohesion words

4)  Evaluate the coherence of the ideas in the text

5)  Identify main and the supporting ideas of the text

6)  Predict the content of the text by looking at the title and some selected sentences from the text

7)  Draw conclusions by reading between the lines

8)  Criticize the main ideas identified in authentic texts
