Topics in numeracy and algebra strands of mathematics curriculum: Natural numbers, operations with natural numbers, fractions, operations with fractions, decimals, percents, factors and multiples, sets, integers, operations with integers, rational numbers, operations with natural numbers, ratio, ratio and proportion, powers and square roots, algebraic expressions, equality and equations, linear equations, algebraic expressions and identities, inequalities. Fundamental concepts in contents and their properties, relationship between those concepts, discussing the concepts, converting different representations of the concepts to eachother. Course Objectives: 

The aim of this course is to provide students a deep understanding of topics in national mathematics curriculum. In addition to these, understanding of properties of those concepts, relations of those concepts with other concepts in mathematics, other disciplines and real life. 

Course Learning Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Use the knowledge of fundamental concepts in middle school mathematics.
  2. Comprehend basics of mathematical conventions, representations, processes and skills relative to numbers, fractions, fundamental concepts in algebra.
  3. Apply mathematical procedures in problem solving process including the concepts of numbers, fractions, fundamental concepts in algebra.
  4. Investigate the approach to teaching of mathematical concepts in different mathematics programs such as national mathematics curriculum and Common Core.
  5. Connect their conceptual understanding with the approach in national and international mathematics programs in middle school.
