Knowledge and skills in basic design concepts, design elements, visual thinking, presentation of thought in two dimension, organization, composition, abstraction. Elements of Design: Point, Line, Shape, Dimension, Texture, Value, Color. Principles of Design: Direction, Repetition, Harmony, Balance, Unity, Dominance, Contrast, Rating, Permeability, Movement, Rhythm, Diversity, Change, … .

Course Objectives: 

The main aim of this course is to teach the basic rules and principles of design to students and to acquire knowledge and skills in basic design concepts, design elements, visual thinking, presentation of thought in two dimension, organization, composition, abstraction. Students are encouraged to go beyond the known patterns in solving basic design problems given to them. The course is supported by extracurricular activities for students to develop their awareness of 'design in everyday life'.

Course Learning Outcomes: 

At the end of the semester, students who have successfully completed this course:

  • will have started to approach life from the industrial designers’ point of view;
  • will have a habit to work with clean and careful craftsmanship;
  • can create two-dimensional compositions in the direction of design principles, using specific design elements - with different materials and good workmanship;
  • can analyze and evaluate any 2D composition in terms of design elements and principles and within the criteria of 'good composition';
  • competently use the design terminology, especially the one specific to two dimensional design; able to use design terminology easily when expressing the opinions about oneself or discussing the others' works.
