Catalog Description:

Formation of soils and basic geology. Geomaterial variability. Basic physical characteristics. Index properties and classification. Water in soils and conductivity. Soil stresses and their distribution. Compressibility and consolidation. Stress-strain behavior (shear strength).

Course Objectives: 

Main aim of this course is to introduce the students to the fundamental principles of soil mechanics and the behavior of engineering soils; how these properties are used to solve some civil engineering problems like earth pressure and slope stability is also covered within the scope of this course.

Course Learning Outcomes: 

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Perform the necessary tests, and evaluate seepage losses through and beneath dams
2. Perform the necessary tests, and analyze the stability of slopes
3. Perform the necessary tests, and apply simple calculations for the estimation of settlements beneath uniformly loaded soil layers
4. Perform the necessary tests, and estimate the earth pressure on earth retaining structures
